PHOENIX — A California man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence over the weekend, authorities said.
The Surprise Police Department said Garrett Headrick, 26, assaulted a woman in a home in the area of Greenway and Dysart roads on Saturday.
Police received a phone call from a neighbor on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. who saw a man allegedly dragging a woman by her hair into a nearby home, according to the Surprise Police Department.
Surprise police officers said they knocked on the front door and heard a woman screaming for help inside the home. The officers forced their way into the home and saw a man sitting on top of her as he was assaulting her.
How did police officers respond?
The officers struck the suspect with “multiple less-lethal bean bag-type rounds.” There were multiple knives found on the floor near the suspect, according to police.
The woman had multiple injuries from being assaulted and suffered from lacerations and contusions and she was taken to a local hospital and is now in stable condition.
Surprise police learned that Headrick traveled from California and waited outside her home before the assault. The victim and Headrick were previously in a relationship and the two have a child together. Headrick is being held on a $1.5 million bond.
No further details were released.
