PHOENIX — A derailed train forced the closure of a busy intersection near downtown Phoenix on Thursday, police said.

The Phoenix Police Department said the train derailed near Grand Avenue and McDowell Road. The latter was expected to remain closed for at least 12 hours after the 10:30 a.m. incident.

Drivers were also not allowed to get on Grand Avenue from 19th Avenue or get on McDowell Road from Grand Avenue.

No one was injured.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area.

Police said it appeared the ground beneath the tracks gave way.

Police said the train may have been carrying new cars.

Numerous agencies were investigating the incident.
