Brush fire forces closure of State Route 89 south of Prescott

PHOENIX — A brush fire forced the closure of State Route 89 south of Prescott Sunday evening, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Around 6 p.m., ADOT said the fire was burning at milepost 295.

The road was reopened before 9 p.m.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, the blaze is active in Wilhoit on the west side of the highway.

Northeast of Prescott, the Pig Fire grew to about 300 acres by Sunday afternoon.

The wildfire that broke out Saturday evening near Interstate 17 between Sedona and Camp Verde, according to authorities.

Around 12:30 p.m., the Coconino National Forest said smoke from the Pig Fire was mostly northbound, bringing light haziness to the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, Munds Park and Flagstaff.

Around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, the Pig Fire started about five miles southeast of Village of Oak Creek. It had grown to about 120 acres by Sunday morning.

The cause of the Pig Fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
