Bridge work along State Route 89A near Sedona to start in spring

PHOENIX – Construction to improve safety on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, including reconditioning the Pumphouse Wash Bridge, will start in early spring, Arizona transportation officials said.

The highway will remain open during the $11.1 million project, although there were will be limited closures on some days and also some overnights. The Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release it expects the job to finished by fall 2023.

Initially, the plan was meant to be three separate projects to be completed at different times by different contractors, but eventually it was decided to combine them into a single arrangement with one firm, Fisher Sand and Gravel.

Lanes will be narrowed to one through work zones only, with traffic alternating northbound and southbound.

The Pumphouse Wash Bridge is slated for new decking and railing. The changes should increase the structure’s length of service “for decades to come,” the agency said.

The steel bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1931.

Crews are also tasked with sediment and erosion control. They’ll do that by upgrading the drainage system with concrete barriers, a retaining wall, pipes and a catch basin.

Rockfall mitigation is on the to-do sheet, as well. That will take place just north of Sedona at milepost 375 and in the switchbacks near the bridge at milepost 389.
