PHOENIX — Border agents in Arizona have shut down an unfinished tunnel between the state and Mexico that was hidden in a cemetery.

Mexican authorities helped the Tucson Sector with the investigation last week.

The U.S. customs agency said the tunnel ran underneath a cemetery in Nogales, Mexico. Agents found a 20-inch by 20-inch opening and followed it 46 feet into Arizona, near the Nogales-Grand Avenue port of entry, also called the DeConcini Port of Entry.

Mexican officials noticed the opening and became suspicious of its purpose.

Inside the tunnel were digging tools, power cords, a generator and a small swamp cooler for ventilation.
