PHOENIX – A 19-year-old Phoenix woman was accused of human smuggling near the U.S.-Mexico border Monday, when she was arrested on smuggling charges for the second time this year, authorities said.

Border agents pulled over the woman’s white Mercedes sedan after seeing three men come from the brush along Interstate 19 near Nogales and get into the car, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection press release.

The men tried to run away but were taken into custody after a short chase.

Through questioning, the agents determined the woman, who was not identified, was trying to smuggle the men. They also determined the men, ages 21, 30, and 31, were Mexican nationals in the U.S. illegally.

The woman was being held on human smuggling charges, and the men were being processed for immigration violations, CBP said.

CBP said records showed that the woman was convicted of human smuggling and served a 60-day sentence seven months earlier.
