Missing 59-year-old Mesa man found dead in Tonto National Forest

Search crews located the body of a missing Mesa man in a Tonto National Forest hiking area, authorities said.

PHOENIX – Search crews located the body of a missing Mesa man in a Tonto National Forest hiking area, authorities announced Wednesday.

Richard Griph, 59, was found dead around 3:10 p.m. Tuesday near the First Water Trailhead northeast of Apache Junction, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

There were no signs of foul play.

Griph was reported missing to the Mesa Police Department around 4:30 a.m. Monday. The family member who made the report told police he hadn’t been heard from since Saturday.

MCSO got involved with the case after learning of Griph’s disappearance around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
