Bike-sharing service to soon be offered on ASU’s Tempe campus

PHOENIX — A bike-sharing service that is offered in several Phoenix-area suburbs will soon roll onto Arizona State University’s main campus, according to the university’s student-run newspaper The State Press.

The Grid Bike Share program is expected to add four new bike-rental stations directly on campus “within the next couple of weeks,” Lisa Parks with Grid Bike Share told the newspaper.

The stations are expected to be close by or next to the Memorial Union, a large hub in the middle of campus that houses restaurants, shops, classrooms and various study niches. There are several stations near the campus, but none directly on it.

Grid Bike Share allows riders to rent a standard, adult bicycle using a personal account number and PIN before parking them at any Grid station or public bike rack in the Valley for an additional $2, the website said. The bikes can be rented for $7 an hour, but students can purchase a plan for $25 for six months.

The service launched in Tempe in May but bike stations have been operating in Phoenix and Mesa since as early as 2014. Parks told The State Press that 300 bikes operate in Tempe alone. More than 15,000 Tempe residents used the service as of July, according to the city’s website.
