From a rollover crash in Mesa to a mother suspected of killing her children and herself, here are some of the top Arizona news stories from May 22-25.

1 dead, 8 hospitalized from rollover collision near Mesa Gateway Airport

One person is dead and eight others were hospitalized from a collision near Mesa Gateway Airport on Sunday that forced a closure of westbound State Route 24, authorities said.

The crash at SR 24 and Signal Butte Road involved a van and a sedan. The van, which had 10 occupants, rolled over and sat resting upside down on its roof, according to the Mesa Police Department.

One person, later identified as 51-year-old Evon Zubah, was pronounced dead at the scene. Eight others, including the driver of the other vehicle, were taken to a hospital.

A preliminary investigation indicated the collision occurred when the sedan ran a red light and hit the van, police said Monday.

Mother suspected of killing 2 children, herself after shooting at husband outside Glendale bar

A mother is believed to have killed herself and her two children after shooting at her husband outside a Glendale bar just after midnight Monday, police said.

Before the fatal shootings, Glendale police officers responded to Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill near 61st Avenue and Bell Road.

A man told officers his wife arrived at the bar, began shooting at him and then fled the scene in a gray SUV, according to the Glendale Police Department.

His wife was 38-year-old Andrea Clarice Davis, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers secured the scene and treated a woman who had been shot in the back of the head. She was brought to a hospital and is expected to survive.

The husband later received threatening text messages from his Davis, who allegedly said she was going to harm the children. He told authorities she was with their children at a Phoenix residence near 49th Avenue and Paradise Lane.

The Glendale and Phoenix police departments began coordinating a response to the residence, and during this time, Davis allegedly sent her husband a photo of one of the children bleeding from the head.

Learning that the children had been injured prompted officers to enter the residence, where they found the wife and their two children — a 10-year-old boy and an 18-month-old girl — dead, with gunshot wounds to the head.

Both scenes remain under active investigation. Phoenix police are investigating the apparent murder-suicide, while Glendale police are investigating the shooting outside the bar.

Sodexo laying off nearly 500 workers at Grand Canyon University campus

SDH Education West LLC, doing business as Sodexo, is laying off nearly 500 workers in Phoenix, according to a filing with the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

Its contract to manage campus dining concepts at Grand Canyon University’s Phoenix campus expires July 14. After a bidding process, GCU awarded the contract to Aramark (NYSE: ARMK) to provide campus dining, retail, catering and athletics-related hospitality programs.

“Aramark has already expressed their intent to hire employees from Sodexo who are currently employed on GCU’s campus — both full-time and part-time student workers — and we are confident in their commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for those affected,” said Bob Romantic, spokesman for GCU. “Aramark held a meeting on campus with those employees last week and more are scheduled in the coming weeks.”

SDH Education West LLC filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN letter, with Arizona officials on May 14 indicating plans to lay off 489 workers at GCU’s main campus in Phoenix.

It’s not uncommon for WARN letters to be filed when contracts expire.

1 person hospitalized, suspect charged after shooting at Mesa Target

One person was arrested while another is in critical condition following a shooting inside a Mesa Target store Sunday evening, authorities said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting just before 8 p.m. at the Target near Power Road and Hampton Avenue, just north of the US 60, according to Mesa police.

The victim had suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital. Mesa police said the victim was in critical but stable condition as of around 11 a.m. Monday.

The suspect fled the area before officers arrived at the scene. Two arrests were made, and one person was later released. The suspect charged was identified as 21-year-old Dylan Stinson.

The store remained closed for the rest of Sunday night following the shooting to allow for investigation.

New polling shows Donald Trump’s approval hitting record low in Arizona

President Donald Trump’s job approval rating in Arizona has fallen to the lowest level recorded during either of his terms, according to a new poll from Noble Predictive Insights released Thursday.

The Arizona Public Opinion Pulse survey, which was conducted May 5-7, found Trump’s statewide job approval at net -17, while his handling of the economy stood at net -27. The poll surveyed 996 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

“We’ve polled Arizona more than anyone else in the country,” Mike Noble, founder and CEO of Noble Predictive Insights, told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “Three months ago he was at negative 13 overall job approval with Arizona voters, which was actually the same job approval he was at just after January 6th, which was his lowest point. But now he’s actually minus 17, so four points exceeding his lowest prior.”

While Trump retains 80% approval among Arizona Republicans, the poll showed sharp erosion among swing groups: Only 27% of independents, 24% of moderates, 31% of Hispanic voters, 37% of women and 24% of voters ages 18-29 approve.

Just 21% of moderates and 25% of independents approve of his handling of the economy.

“When you look at his job approval on the economy, it’s negative 27 with Arizona voters. That’s wild, especially with some of the core groups like independents he’s doing terrible with: people under a $50,000 household income, younger voters,” Noble said. “A lot of these swingier demographics that you need for the general election.”
