Big storm bypasses Phoenix area but drops some rain, more likely on way

PHOENIX — A tropical depression that looked like it would hit the Valley with heavy rainfall failed to deliver but a little more rain is headed this way.

Valerie Meyers with the National Weather Service said Mother Nature threw a curveball late Monday and metro Phoenix missed out of some serious rain.

“It took that tropical depression and it traveled off to the northeast. We just got that glancing blow,” Meyers said.

A flood watch was canceled but another storm was rolling in from the Pacific Ocean and should arrive late Tuesday morning.

Forecasts called for 70 percent chance of rain on the last official day of summer.

“It will be localized if it decides to dump a lot of rain,” Meyers said. “For the most part, some places will see a quarter of an inch of rainfall but there could be some storms that could dump a half-inch in a very short period of time.”

There are eight days left in the monsoon. Sky Harbor Airport, which is the official precipitation gauge for Phoenix, has received almost 3 inches of rain since June 15. That’s almost a quarter of an inch above the norm.
