Arrest made in Phoenix collision that left bicyclist dead

A man was arrested two days after a fatal collision involving a bicyclist while driving a truck loaned out to them by a friend, police said Thursday.

Jesus Alejandro Cardenas Angulo, 32, was booked on manslaughter, tampering with evidence and accident involving death charges.

Crews arrived to the scene of the crash south of University Drive and 16th Street around 5:45 a.m. Monday to find that the bicyclist was hit mid-block and ejected, and his bicycle was “dragged several feet before becoming dislodged,” according to authorities.

The driver of the white GMC pickup truck involved in the collision left the scene before police arrived. The truck was located two days later near 47th and Olive avenues.

Officers spoke to its registered owner, who said the truck had been loaned out to Cardenas Angulo and that he was the only one who had driven it. The friend had also informed the owner the truck needed its windshield replaced, as the owner suspected the truck hit an animal.

A search warrant was obtained, evidence was gathered and Cardenas Angulo admitted to his involvement in the collision and that he left the scene because he was scared, authorities said.

The deceased bicyclist was identified as Amado Rodriguez Jr., 66.
