PHOENIX — While some football fans will likely be sipping on an adult beverage during Saturday’s rivalry game between Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, the mayors of the schools’ hometowns will be getting a little thirsty.

The mayors made a friendly bet Friday that would see the winner receive a craft beer from the loser’s city.

Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchel wasted no time dropping a little smack talk.

“The last time Mayor [Jonathan] Rothschild and I made a bet, ASU beat UofA in men’s basketball on Feb. 7,” he said in a release. “I’m excited to win this bet, too.”

With the Wildcats winning last year’s matchup, Rothschild maintained a quiet confidence.

“I have two things to say: Go Cats! and watch out for Sparky,” he said in the release.

The bet will be paid during next year’s League of Arizona Cities and Towns conference. In addition to presenting the winner with their prize, the loser has to pose for a photo with the winner and the winning team’s mascot.

In case you’re interested, ASU holds a slight 2-1 edge in the contest in the four years the mayors have been in office.

The ASU Sun Devils will take on the rival UA Wildcats on Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
