PHOENIX — The Barrow Neurological Institute broke ground on a new research facility on Thursday.

The Barrow Neuroplex will be a 130,050-square-foot, five-story building that will help the institute further research and medical innovation.

It will be located adjacent to the Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical center campus in downtown Phoenix.

“The goal of this expansion is to bring to Barrow a similar excitement as Google’s headquarters in Silicon Valley, where the most-talented neuroscientists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists in the world collaborate to innovate and advance our field,” Dr. Michael Lawton, president and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute, said in a press release.

The expansion will include 30,000 square feet of research space, increasing Barrow’s laboratory capacity by 50%.

The Neuroplex will serve as the new home for outpatient clinics for neurosurgical, epilepsy, neuro-oncology and endocrinology clinics.

Additionally, it will house an ambulatory surgical center and outpatient surgical suites for modern and less invasive surgeries that do not require hospitalization.

The Neuroplex is set to open in late 2020.
