Arizona woman arrested at Champlain Port of Entry with illegal firearm

A 62-year-old Arizona woman was arrested at the Champlain Port of Entry along the U.S.-Canada border after federal officers determined she was illegally in possession of a firearm, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

The woman, a U.S. citizen whose name was not released, was driving toward Canada on May 20 when she was stopped for an outbound inspection, according to CBP.

The woman told officers she had a firearm and attempted to retrieve it before officers detained her for further investigation, the agency said. Investigators later determined she illegally possessed the gun.

“The safety and security of our ports and communities is a top priority,” Area Port Director Steven Bronson said in a statement.

The woman and the .22-caliber Taurus handgun were turned over to the New York State Police, CBP said. She faces felony charges of criminal possession of a weapon.

The Champlain Port of Entry, in northern New York, is among the busiest crossings along the U.S.-Canada border.
