Avondale’s Billy Moore Days set to return in October

PHOENIX — The 2019 edition of Billy Moore Days will be returning to Avondale in October.

The four-day event, which is named after the city’s founder, will take place from Oct. 17-20 on Western Avenue.

Each day will feature a plethora of festivities for all ages including a carnival, parade, beer garden, food trucks, games, pie eating contests, corn hole tournaments, stunt shows, concerts and stage acts.

Carnival lovers will want to make their way over to DeConcini Park, which will be hosting the Carnival every day of the event.

Activities include classics such as a Ferris wheel, fun house and the zipper. Traditional Carnival food like candy apples, corn dogs and funnel cakes will also be available for purchase.

Carnival hours do vary, however, so check online for hours and pricing details.

Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 will see music performances and local acts, including representation from Miss Latino America.

Friday’s headliner is Str8up at 9 p.m., while Saturday includes The Backroads at 6:30 p.m. and Gustavo Angeles at 8:30 p.m. The family stage will also feature dance competitions and Avondale’s Got Talent.

Saturday will undoubtedly be the most action-packed day of Billy Moore Days.

The day will start off with a parade at 9 a.m as floats, marching bands, horse-drawn wagons, dance groups, local celebrities, political figures, antique cars and more will walk down Western Avenue.

Dozens of colorful entries will also be featured in the parade and prizes for the best overall appearance (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) will be awarded. Those who are interested will need to pre-register online.

Western-themed games, shows and contests will follow the parade from noon to 11 p.m.

Entertainment ranges from comedy stunt shows and horsemanship demonstrations to free kid activities such as panning for gold, archery, rubber band guns, rodeo calf roping and “branding” at a face paint station.

Family-friendly competitions include sack races, yee-haw hollering and a facial hair contest.

But what’s a little family fun without some pie?

An age-divided pie eating contest (ages 3 and up) will begin at 2 p.m. on the family stage. In order to partake, visit the Village Inn booth by 1 p.m. Saturday.

Looking for a cool down during the hottest part of the day?

Barrel wars will be conducted at 3 p.m., as Avondale firefighters square off by pushing a barrel back and forth along a cable with fire hoses. Those interested in battling need to pre-register online.

The corn hole tournaments will get underway at 4 p.m. and will last until 10 p.m.

Teams of two will need to pre-register online in order to participate in one of the two divisions. The casual, more backyard feel division is $5 per person, while those looking to show off their skills can enter the competitive division at $10 per person.

Check-in and warmups begin at 3 p.m.

Admission and parking are free for all those who attend Billy Moore Days, which is located at 495 E. Western Avenue.
