ASU report shows dramatic impact of virus outbreak on local nonprofits

PHOENIX — Arizona nonprofits are struggling to serve their local communities as the coronavirus outbreak continues to take its toll on the state.
A report conducted by Arizona State University’s Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation highlighted the effects on local nonprofits through data collected from more than 400 organizations, according to a press release.
The COVID-19 outbreak has forced 11% of Arizona nonprofits to cease operations and nearly 80% have experienced a decrease in normal service functions, according to the report.
More than 40% of local nonprofits also report it is unlikely they will be able to conduct normal services during the next four weeks and about 20% anticipate being unable to meet payroll requirements over the next eight weeks.

“Arizona’s nonprofits are a vital part of the economic and social fabric of our state,” Dr. Robert Ashcraft, executive director of ASU’s Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation, said in the release.
“Citizens everywhere rely on these organizations for everything from emergency services to cultural enrichment.”
There are 22,907 registered nonprofits in Arizona with 171,172 paid employees who earn $8.3 billion in total wages, according to the report.
