ASU ranked among the top environmentally friendly campuses

PHOENIX — A recent report highlighted Arizona State University as one of 10 most environmentally friendly college campuses.

The U.S. News and World report cited the university’s Carbon Project that works to eliminate emissions through offsets.

ASU ranked No. 10 in the report.

“One way ASU does that is, we work with partners throughout the Valley to plant trees in community parks and places ASU students work play and study,” Assistant Director of University Sustainability Practices Corey Hawkey said.

ASU paved the way by establishing the nation’s first school of sustainability in 2006.

The university prides itself on having comprehensive academic research programs, including the Center for Negative Emissions.

“We were recently recognized for being innovation of the year for actually capturing carbon dioxide directly out of the air,” Hawkey added. “Despite the fact that ASU increased its population by 30% and gross square footage by 40% since 2007 we have been able to reduce our emissions by 27%.”
