ASU planning to return to full in-person learning for fall semester

PHOENIX — Arizona State University is planning a return to full in-person learning for the fall semester, the university announced Monday.

ASU expects to be in Learning Mode 1 at the start of the semester on Aug. 19, which calls for all on-campus instruction for students unless otherwise noted.

A select number of courses will remain virtual for the new semester. Details about class sizes, vaccination requirements and other logistics were not immediately available.

“We continue to closely monitor COVID-19 on and near our campuses and remain ready to shift to remote learning if health conditions or local, state or federal guidelines require it,” ASU Provost Mark Searle said in a note to faculty and students.

ASU started the fall 2020 semester in Learning Mode 2, a hybrid model of learning that allows for in-person instruction with limited capacity and virtual instruction.

The university began the spring semester in Learning Mode 2 and continues to operate in the hybrid model.

Vaccination efforts for ASU instructional staff conducting in-person learning have been ongoing for more than a month.

For the week ending Sunday, the university reported eight positive tests among its community from 1,842 tests, a positivity rate of 0.4%.
