ASU honors student Emma Broyles crowned Miss America

Miss Alaska Emma Broyles, an ASU honors student, was crowned as Miss America on Thursday night at a Connecticut casino in the competition’s 100th anniversary event.

Broyles, who claimed a $100,000 college scholarship, emerged as the winner out of 51 contestants representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

ASU’s Barrett, The Honors College, actually had two contestants to root for, with Miss Arizona Amber Barto being a 2020 alum of the school.

Barrett hosted a watch party for the show, which was broadcast on NBC’s Peacock streaming service.

“The Miss America competition highlights the achievements, leadership, community involvement, and social impact of talented young women. Emma and Amber impressively embody these attributes,” Mark Jacobs, Barrett’s dean, said in a press release.

“We couldn’t have asked for two better representatives of our college in the competition.”

Earlier this month, Barrett posted a video of Broyles and Barto explaining how their experience at the college helped prepare them for the Miss America competition.

Miss America began as a 1921 Atlantic City beauty pageant. It has evolved away from the emphasis on looks alone — contestants are no longer judged on physical appearance — with a new focus on leadership, talent and communication skills.
