Arizona’s Libertarian Senate candidate wants cities, not states, to regulate abortion

PHOENIX – While Arizona’s two major party U.S. Senate nominees have been battling over the abortion issue, a third candidate has a different take on the controversial subject.

Marc Victor is the only Libertarian whose name will appear on ballots for Arizona’s general election in November, although his party has several write-in candidates.

Victor said Friday he agreed with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that protected abortion rights at the federal level for nearly 50 years.

But he doesn’t think giving the authority to regulate abortions to the states goes far enough.

“If it were up to me, I would put it even in a smaller community,” he told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News. “Imagine if Mesa outlawed abortion and Tempe said, ‘No, you get to have an abortion here now.’”

The incumbent in the race, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, supports a woman’s right to make decisions about her reproductive health.

Republican challenger Blake Masters, meanwhile, is anti-abortion and applauded the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Victor, who calls himself “a live and let live kind of guy,” prefers more of a market-based approach to the divisive issue.

“Let’s recognize that there are good people on both sides of this issue,” he said.

“And then let’s see what the market wants in terms of what they select and where people want to live, where they want to do business if they feel strongly about that issue.”
