Arizona wildlife officials looking for poachers in elk’s death

PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department is investigating the late August death of a bull elk in the northern part of the state.

The elk was poached north of Heber and west of Forest Road 153, according to a press release, and the meat was left behind.

The agency said many hunters were in the area at the time and may have witnessed suspicious activity.

“We need assistance from the public to find the individual(s) responsible,” Ken Clay, wildlife manager, said in the release.

“This is the action of a criminal — it’s theft of wildlife resources from the people of Arizona.”

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call the agency at 800-352-0700.

Game and Fish is offering a reward of up to $1,500, while the Arizona Elk Society and Arizona Deer Association are offering up to $2,500 each.

The agency is also looking for information about a water catchment that was contaminated with fuel last month.

Anyone with information about the incident at Young Canyon’s Trick Tank, about 14 miles northeast of Flagstaff, was asked to call the vandalism hotline at 1-800-826-3257.
