Arizona wildlife agency seeking homes for desert tortoises

PHOENIX — The Desert Tortoise Adoption Program at the Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking homes for over 100 desert tortoises.

The tortoises are set to wake up from brumation, which is a period of inactivity for the reptiles that allows them to handle hot or cold environments for an extended period of time.

The tortoises can’t be released back into the wild due to risk of respiratory disease and genetic disruptions. Captive desert tortoises can also face risks of abandonment due to illegal breeding, according to a press release.

Desert tortoises can grow up to nine to 15 inches and weigh about eight to 15 pounds.

Adopting a desert tortoise is a long-term commitment as the tortoises can live for 80 to 100 years. The tortoises are herbivores and eat a diet of plants.

Tortoises that are from Arizona must remain in the state. If an owner must move away from the state, the tortoise must be returned to an approved adoption facility, according to the AZGFD.

Those looking to adopt a desert tortoise must have a burrow ready prior to submitting an application. Arizonans can only adopt one tortoise per household. Breeding captive tortoises is illegal.

“Desert tortoises offer longtime companionship without the drama,” Desert Tortoise Adoption Program coordinator Tegan Wolf said in a press release. “Tortoises are affectionate and low maintenance. They enjoy healthy greens, exploring the outdoors and visiting with their companions.

“With the right preparations, desert tortoises make a great addition to a family home. Our team of biologists will help you find your perfect match and prepare for their arrival.”
