Arizona Thanksgiving holiday DUI arrests down slightly from last year, up from 2019

PHOENIX — DUI arrests over the Thanksgiving holiday this year fell slightly from 2020 but was higher than 2019, the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said Monday.

From Wednesday through Saturday, 350 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Of those arrests, 96 were for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.

During the holiday in 2020 that spanned the same time period, 358 people were arrested for DUI with 79 being cited for extreme DUI. Officers arrested 330 people for DUI in 2019 with 64 being cited for extreme DUI.

The average known BAC of those arrested over the holiday was 0.158. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.

The report also noted that 97 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, the same as in 2019 and up from 92 last year.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 8,513 traffic stops compared to 9,407 in 2020. Officers made 10,507 traffic stops during the Thanksgiving weekend in 2019.
