Arizona shipping companies gearing up for heavy influx of holiday packages

PHOENIX — Even though Santa gets all the credit, shipping companies do all the work.  The two busiest days for the United States Postal Service are almost here.

“December 14 is our largest shipping day, so what that means is December 21^st is going to be our largest delivery day,” said Julie Utley with the United States Postal Service.

The real Santa’s little helpers are at United States Postal Service Phoenix West Valley Processing & Distribution Center.

“This place is as large as a football field,” she said. “It processes all of Arizona and New Mexico’s parcels, it runs 24-7 and we’ve hired several thousand new employees for just the holiday season.”

The facility will process more than 15 million pieces of mail on Dec. 18.          

“If you saw it, it would look like a roller coaster with packages on it,” she said.

It’s set up to be all automated, but still requires thousands to process the enormous volume of packages, she said.

Nationally, it takes the United States Postal Service almost 200,000 mail trucks to holiday mail this season. In all, the Postal Service will deliver over 15 billion cards, letters, magazines and packages during the holiday season.
