Arizona resolution would support Californians if they secede from US

PHOENIX — If California wants to secede from the United States, two Arizona state lawmakers want to make sure the state supports their residents if they go.

Rep. Mark Finchem, R-Oro Valley, introduced a resolution that would “support California’s secession from the United States.”

“Arizonans, in deep respect of the United States of America and our constitutional republic that secures the blessings of liberty to us and our posterity, give complete support to California’s secession,” it read.

If it “becomes necessary” for California to “dissolve the political bands” and “assume among the powers…to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them,” Finchem’s resolution would ensure that the state’s residents have the support of Arizona.

“[If] California’s form of government has become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its power in such a form as seems most likely to effect their happiness,” it read.

“With hope of mutual happiness, Arizona supports California in its endeavor to leave the Union.”

Finchem wasn’t alone in this way of thinking: The resolution was co-sponsored by Rep. David Stringer, R-Prescott.
