Here’s what Arizona voters need to know about registration deadline, start of early voting

PHOENIX – With the calendar flipping to October, the 2024 general election is right around the corner and the Arizona registration deadline is fast approaching.

In fact, Monday (Oct. 7) is the deadline for eligible Grand Canyon State residents to register and be able to vote in the Nov. 5 election.

The early voting period officially starts two days later, when ballots will be mailed to members of the Active Early Voting List and any registered voters who made a one-time request.

County election officials started sending out military and overseas ballots on Sept. 21.

How to beat Arizona registration deadline

Arizonans can register to vote online at ServiceArizona.com or by contacting their recorder’s office for instructions.

In addition to beating the Arizona registration deadline, residents must be at least 18 years old by Election Day and U.S. citizens to be eligible to vote in November.

Under a 2004 Arizona law, registrants must provide proof of citizenship to be able to vote in state and local races, including an initiative to expand abortion rights and a slew of other ballot measures.

Arizonans who attest to their citizenship but don’t provide documentation can register, but they will receive a federal-only ballot that is limited to the races for president and the U.S. Senate and House.

Voters who are already registered are encouraged to check their status through their county recorder’s office. Maricopa County residents can do so at Maricopa.Vote.

When and where can registered Arizonans vote during general election?

Twelve in-person vote centers and multiple drop boxes across the Valley will open Oct. 9, the same day ballots go out. Maricopa County voters will have more than 240 vote centers to choose from by Election Day.

Oct. 25 is the last day for Arizonans who aren’t on the Active Early Voting List to make a one-time request for a mail ballot. Oct. 29 is the recommended deadline for putting completed ballots in the mail.

Voters can still drop off completed early ballots at drop boxes or vote centers through 7 p.m. on Election Day. But if you want your vote to be included in the first batch of results that night, you have to submit your ballot before election week. Early ballots dropped off on Election Day can take days or even weeks to be processed and tabulated.
