PHOENIX — The state of Arizona lands just below the national average when it comes to the amount of money its residents receive in tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service.

A SmartAsset.com analysis of 2016 tax return data provided by the IRS showed that the average American received $2,895 in federal tax refunds, which is slightly more than the average Arizonan receiving $2,622 back after the April returns were due that year.

The Grand Canyon State ranked 24th in the United States in average return amount.

Refunds ranged from more than $3,000 in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana to just above $2,300 in Maine.

Eight of the 10 states on the low end in 2016 bordered Canada.

According to the study, 2.24 million Arizonans received refunds two years ago, and the federal government refunded those people a total of $5.9 billion.

Across the country, the government refunded more than $300 billion in returns.

California led all states in the number of refunds with 13.7 million in 2016 totaling more than $38.4 billion.
