Arizona ranked No. 7 in the nation for theft claims in 2014

Arizona has made another Top 10 list, but it’s not something to celebrate.

State Farm said Arizona ranked No. 7 in the nation for theft claims in 2014. Spokesman Sevag Sarkissian said the holiday season is the busiest for thieves.

“People go about enjoying their holidays. It’s important to remember unfortunately thieves are also going about their business, said Sarkissian. “December and January are the top two months for theft claims in the United States.”

In January 2014, there were 9,817 theft claims filed in the country. December was not far behind with 9,533 claims. However, the national theft claims per month is dropping overall.

If you are traveling for the holidays, Sarkissian also said it is best not to mention anything on social media until you return. Have your calls forwarded to you when you are away from home as burglars sometimes check to see if someone is home by making a phone call. Ask neighbors to check on your home and pick up the mail and newspaper.

If you plan to be away for an extended period of time, arrange to have your grass mowed. You may also want to ask your neighbor to take your garbage cans out while you are away as burglars sometimes take empty garbage cans as a sign that a family is away.
