Arizona portable permanent disability placards no longer expire

PHOENIX — A new state law has eliminated all expiration dates on portable permanent MVD disability placards, the Arizona Department of Transportation said Thursday.

Previously, Valley drivers with the placards were required to renew them every five years.

“It’s more of a convenience for people, they don’t have to worry about an expiration date. It’s something we welcome as a change to better serve our customers,” Doug Nick, spokesman for MVD said.

Qualifying motorists will be given blue permanent placards that are designed to allow caregivers or disabled drivers to easily switch the placard between multiple vehicles.

However, the temporary red placard is still only valid for six months and eligibility requirements for both placards remain the same.
