Arizona politicians react to former first lady Barbara Bush’s passing

PHOENIX — Former first lady Barbara Bush, wife of the nation’s 41st president and mother of the 43rd, passed away on Tuesday, after deciding not to seek further medical treatment just days prior.

Bush was 92.

Here are some of the statements released by politicians, both in Arizona and nationwide.

George W. Bush tweeted a statement about the passing of his mother, former first lady Barbara Bush, on Tuesday.

Several Arizona politicians also tweeted out their respect for Bush.

Sheriff Paul Penzone brought her up on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Mac and Gaydos on Tuesday.

“With every leader, whether male or female, there’s always going to be that significant other who … brings that strength, that dignity, that respect. She was an amazing woman,” he said.

“You may have seen her husband as president, but make no mistake about it, she was an influence behind the scenes that did amazing things on behalf of this nation.”

Sen. John McCain released a statement:

“Cindy and I are deeply saddened by the passing of former First Lady Barbara Bush, but we take comfort in knowing she spent her last moments surrounded by the ones she loved the most. A devoted wife, loving mother and proud grandmother, Barbara understood that the greatest joy in life comes from putting the needs of others before yourself. Barbara carried this remarkable selflessness and a firm resolve into the White House where she dedicated her service as First Lady to advancing literacy – a cause that continues through her foundation today.

“Barbara remains an example to all of us of kindness and patriotism, and will fondly be remembered for her courage, grit and intense loyalty to those she loved and cared for. We send our prayers and condolences to the entire Bush family as they mourn the loss of an extraordinary woman.”

In addition to George W. Bush, two other presidents tweeted statements toward the first lady.

She was one of only two first ladies to also be the mother of a president. The other is Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy raised more than $40 million for more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide.
