Arizona ranks as one of the most problematic places for towing abuses

PHOENIX — A report found that Arizona and Phoenix were among the worst states and cities in need of vehicle towing and storage reform.

According to the analysis, done by the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, Arizona was the sixth most frequently named state in need of pro-consumer reform and Phoenix was ninth in terms of problematic cities for towing and storage abuses.

For the report, the PCI surveyed 448 employees who commonly deal with towing issues.

Excessive rates and fees were identified as the worst overall problem consumers and insurers face from towing companies, with 80 percent of respondents listing it as the No. 1 problem.

Daily storage rates were specifically listed as the most frequent problem insurers encounter.

Release process issues were another major issue listed by respondents, 69 percent of people surveyed said this was the second-worst problem they faced.

These issues have been brought up in the past, but the state has seen little change.

The analysis mirrored a similar report done by the PCI in 2015 which also had Phoenix listed as one of the top-five problematic cities in terms of towing issues. The report also established unreasonable fees as the biggest problem consumers face.
