PHOENIX — A handful of Arizona politicians issued statements in response to former U.S. attorney Doug Jones’ stunning upset in the Alabama Senate election on Tuesday.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake was the first to speak publicly after it was announced that Jones won over Roy Moore, a former Alabama state judge and accused sexual harasser.

Flake had spoken out in support of Jones in the past. He has told reporters that he would vote outside of his own party before voting for Moore and even donated $100 to Jones’ campaign.

Sen. John McCain had not reacted to Jones’ victory by Tuesday night, but he had called on Moore to step aside last month, after it was revealed that he had sexually assaulted or harassed several teenage girls when he was in his 30s.

His daughter, Meghan McCain, did not hold back, tweeting “Suck it, Bannon.” Her tweet referenced former White House adviser Steve Bannon, who supported Moore in both the primary and general elections.

President Donald Trump, who publicly advocated for Moore and even recorded automatic calls for him, congratulated Jones in a tweet on Tuesday.
