Arizona man sentenced to 15 years for selling fentanyl that caused fatal OD

PHOENIX – An Arizona man was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in federal prison for supplying the fentanyl that killed a woman 2½ years ago, authorities said.

Oscar Sun Acuna Jr., 36, of Tucson, previously pleaded guilty to distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said in a press release Wednesday.

Acuna sold two pills containing fentanyl to the victim and her boyfriend for $30 in May 2020. The woman died of an overdose.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, six out of 10 fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills analyzed in 2022 had potentially lethal amounts of fentanyl.

Acuna had a loaded handgun and 73 fentanyl pills when he was arrested, authorities said.

His prison sentence will be followed by five years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Tucson Police Department.
