Arizona man sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for illegally voting in 2020

PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced to a year and a half in prison on Monday for illegally voting in the 2020 general election, authorities said.

Roberto Garcia of San Tan Valley pleaded guilty in July to one count of illegal voting after being indicted in March, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced in a press release.

Garcia is already in prison for a separate matter and will serve the new sentence concurrently, according to the release.

Prosecutors say Garcia, 35, falsely filled out his voter registration form, marking down that he hadn’t been convicted of a felony when he was previously convicted of two felony offenses.

His voting rights also hadn’t been restored since 2006, the release said.

Pinal County elections officials were unaware of his ineligibility to vote and his ballot was counted in the election.

Garcia can become eligible to vote again after completing his sentence and applying for and receiving rights restoration.
