PHOENIX — An Arizona man has been indicted in a human smuggling crash that killed a migrant and injured more, authorities announced Wednesday.

Samuel Lopez-Ozuna, 18, of Tucson, is accused of fleeing a traffic stop while carrying seven migrants in his Chevrolet Tahoe before crashing and rolling the vehicle near the border town of Arivaca, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

One person died and three others were seriously injured in the crash on Aug. 9.

Border Patrol agents originally attempted to stop Lopez-Ozuna because his vehicle had fake license plates and they had a suspicion he was engaged in human smuggling.

Lopez-Ozuna was indicted on one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens for profit placing in jeopardy the life of any person resulting in death, one count of transportation of illegal aliens for profit resulting in death and one count of transportation of illegal aliens for profit placing in jeopardy the life of any person resulting in death. He could face life in prison if convicted.

Homeland Security Investigations -Tucson, Border Patrol and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department conducted the investigation in the case.
