Arizona man gets 6 months for illegally voting in 2020 general election

PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced Monday to six months in prison for voting illegally in the 2020 general election, authorities said.

Victor Manuel Aguirre was already a convicted felon and hadn’t had his voting rights restored when he voted, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office said in a press release Wednesday.

Aguirre pleaded guilty to one felony count of attempted illegal voting on July 26.

He was originally indicted by a state grand jury in August of 2021 on one count of false registration and one count of illegal voting.

Prosecutors say he indicated he was eligible to vote when filled out a registration form while he was an inmate in the Pima County Jail in September 2020.

The Pima County Recorder’s Office did not know about Aguirre’s convictions and counted his vote in the 2020 general election, according to the release.
