Arizona man sentenced to 20 years in prison for sex crimes against 14-year-old girl

An Arizona man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday for sex crimes involving a child.

PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday for sex crimes involving a 14-year-old girl, authorities said.

Darrell Ray Lavery, who also goes by Darrell Ray Bragg Jr., 25, of Paulden, Arizona pleaded guilty to multiple sex crime charges, according to a Tuesday Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) release.

Why was Arizona man sentenced for child sex crimes?

An investigation by YCSO and the Prescott Police Department found that, in June 2020, Lavery gave the teen girl alcohol for the first time, according to police.

Lavery went on to commit multiple sex crimes in a hotel room against the girl, according to authorities.

He was later incarcerated for a different crime and made multiple phone calls to the victim, while in custody.

During the calls, he confessed to knowing her age and talked about the sex crimes he committed against her, authorities said.

Lavery made future plans to commit more acts against her after his release.

He pleaded guilty to the following charges, which were considered dangerous crimes against children:

Sexual conduct with a minor
Attempted sexual conduct with a minor
Four-counts of luring a minor for sexual exploitation.

Additionally, Lavery was ordered to serve five-consecutive lifetime probation terms after serving his prison sentence.

“Adults who prey on children have no place in Yavapai County. My office will aggressively prosecute adults who choose to victimize children,” Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane said in a release.

“I hope the lengthy sentence in this case will deter others from sexualizing children.”
