The grind to and from work is a daily routine for us all, but in the unfortunate cases of more than 4,400 Americans in 2013, they did not make it back home.

Of the 4,400 workers who died on the job, 400 were homicide victims, according to a Vox report.

While 11 states avoided even a single lost life due to workplace homicide, Arizona led all states with 8.3 homicides per million workers last year. However, they ranked behind Washington D.C., which had a whopping 18.6 homicides per million workers.

Between 2003-2013, there were about 9,000 deaths in the workplace. More than half (51.3 percent) of them were the result of a shooting. About 28 percent were suicides. Animal attacks accounted for 4.5 percent of workplace deaths.

Police officers suffered the most murders between 2011-2013 (129), with retail workers a close second (118). Security guards, taxi drivers and cashiers rounded out the top five high-murder jobs.

Between 2011-2013, 81.9 percent of workplace-related homicide victims were men.
