Arizona Latino vote could sway presidential election

More than one million Latino voters in Arizona could head to the polls this November and that could possibly change the outcome of the presidential election.

“The margin of victory in the 2008 presidential election in Arizona, to win the whole state, was just over 195,000 voters,” said Penda Hair with Advancement Project, a voting advocacy group.

According to Hair, there was more than 650,000 registered Latino voters who did not vote in the 2010 election.

But the potential million Latino voters will have to jump a few hurdles to case their vote in 2012.

“Arizona has a requirement that is currently in litigation, in the courts, that you have to show proof of citizenship in order to register to vote,” said Hair.

The requirement could be decided on by the Arizona Supreme Court as soon as October. Thirteen other states have requested data from the Department of Homeland Security to purge ineligible voters.
