Arizona kids with special needs can get custom-made equipment

PHOENIX — Phoenix’s youngest physically challenged people can now get medical equipment adapted to their special needs.

The ADAPT shop makes equipment such as walkers and chairs for disabled children up to 5 years old.

Tina Martin with Southwest Human Development said the center has been a lifesaver since 2011.

“[One client’s] knees couldn’t bend, and he had to crawl everywhere,” she said.

“Our technicians built him a custom walker for his size. He can now walk upright into his kindergarten class.”

The shop also helps families and therapists choose appropriate equipment for children. Martin says the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Every day, there’s something wonderful that happens,” she said, “a problem that can be solved.”

Southwest Human Development runs the ADAPT shop near 24th Street and Thomas Road.
