Arizona Humane Society saves 8-year-old dog with blood transfusion

PHOENIX — An 8-year-old Yorkie mix can still enjoy belly rubs and tail wags after a recent blood transfusion saved her life.

Kimiko was anemic, emaciated, hypothermic and unresponsive when she was brought into the Arizona Humane Society in early October.

Her condition was so poor that veterinarians decided to proceed with a blood transfusion, an uncommon procedure in animal shelters.

Lucky for Kimiko, there was a perfect candidate for the transfusion.

Jasmine, a year-and-a-half old Labrador Retriever mix, was being treated for a broken leg at the same time.

Kimiko’s vitals immediately began improving after the transfusion and is feeling significantly better, according to the Humane Society.

Both dogs are still receiving care at the AHS Foster Hero and are expected to remain there for another month.

AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital treats more than 12,000 sick, injured and abused pets every year.
