Arizona Humane Society hosts 1-day free adoption special for all pets

PHOENIX — The Arizona Humane Society is hosting a one-day adoption event on Saturday where all pets will have $0 adoption fees at all of its adoption locations.

In 2025, AHS has cared for more than 13,000 sick, injured and abused pets. Currently, there are almost 1,000 pets in AHS’s shelter and nearly 1,000 pets in foster homes — the highest number in AHS’s 68-year history.

“As the community continues to experience high population growth, increasing home prices and evictions, inflation, a lack of affordable pet friendly housing and access to veterinary, a huge toll is being placed on Valley shelters,” AHS President and CEO Dr. Steven Hansen said in a press release.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of adopting, fostering, volunteering and donating. We need to make room in our kennels for the long summer ahead where more pets will need rescue due to the deadly heat.”

Why is the Arizona Humane Society hosting the adoption special?

AHS said it is bracing itself for another record-breaking summer, especially ahead Fourth of July, which is when it stated more pets go missing than any other time of the year.

To meet the increasing demand, AHS reopened adoption and foster operations at its Sunnyslope Campus in October 2024.

AHS has also reduced big dogs’ stay at the shelter by four days. Despite that decrease, AHS still needs more adopters to step up not only to give those pups their forever home but to make space for other pets in need.

Arizona Humane Society by the numbers:

• 13% increase of pets treated in AHS’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital year-over-year.
• 900-1,000 pets consistently being cared for in temporary foster homes, with another 100 pets awaiting placement.
• 165 orphaned, underaged kittens and puppies entered AHS’s Bottle Baby ICU and Kitten Nursery last week.
• 11,000 spay/neuter surgeries performed by AHS veterinarians this year.
• AHS’s Field Team has received 9,500 calls for pets in distress including seven heat-related pet deaths in the last three weeks.
• Because shelters are full, healthy pets needing to be rehomed due to a change in housing or loss of a job have no place to go. AHS’s wait time for an owner surrender appointment is five months.
