Arizona highway officials promise closure-free driving for New Year’s weekend

PHOENIX — Travelers along the freeways in Phoenix this weekend should have smooth sailing, at least as far as closures go, the state highway department said Friday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the only exceptions were work-zone construction already in place on Interstate 19 near Tucson and reduced lanes on I-40 near the Arizona-California border.

However, rainy weather could lead to some road closures throughout the weekend. Thanks to an incoming cold front, most of the Valley is expected to get rain starting Friday, while Flagstaff and parts of the high country could see snow.

Transportation officials are working overtime to keep the roads safe not only from tricky weather this New Year’s weekend, but from drunk drivers as well.

Valley Metro teamed up with Coors Light and Uber to offer users free rides on the light rail, buses and Dial-A-Ride and reduced fares on Uber transportation. Triple-A of Arizona will also be offering its annual “Tipsy Tow” service for those who need to tow their car back to their home.

For those looking for unique ways to ring in the New Year, Prescott, Show Low and Flagstaff will be replacing the traditional New Year’s Eve ball with illuminated cowboy boots, clubs and a pinecone, respectively.

Tempe will be hosting its annual fireworks show, thanks in part to Four Peaks Brewing Company, which stepped up last minute to offer to fund the show and ensure a memorable New Year’s for all.
