Arizona high school sports put on hold, but no plans to cancel spring season

PHOENIX – High school sports in Arizona are being put on hold for the next two weeks, but there are no plans to cancel the spring championship season, the Arizona Interscholastic Association announced Monday.

AIA Executive Board said it was pausing competitions in accordance with the state’s decision to close all schools in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak at least through March 27.

“If this timeframe holds true, it should hopefully not impact postseason tournaments,” Seth Polansky, AIA sports information coordinator, said in a press release.

The AIA regulates sports for the state’s public district schools and some charter and private schools.

March 30 is the earliest competition will resume, the AIA said.

The spring sports are baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track, boys volleyball and girls beach volleyball.

“We will keep all processes in place for postseason tournaments,” Polansky said.

“If the spring championship season extends for any period of time, the AIA will be ready to conduct tournaments in their entirety.”
