Arizona health department launches baby formula shortage resource page

PHOENIX – Arizona health officials have launched a web page filled with information and resources to help families navigate the nationwide baby formula shortage.

“It provides some resources for parents, caregivers, as well as community organizations … and other providers who support families in Arizona,” Carla Berg, Arizona Department of Health Services deputy director for public health services, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday.

The AZDHS formula shortage page has information about a variety of related topics, including why there’s a shortage and what families should do if they can’t find their usual brand in stores.

One useful resource is a graphic that shows dozens of different infant formulas by category so families can learn about potential options during the shortage.

“If they’re used to using lactose sensitivity formulas or hypo-allergenic, for example, this visual helps them better see which other types of brands they could try,” Berg said.

Berg warned against watering down formula or using homemade formula and said parents should work with their children’s doctors, “especially for babies who need specialized formulas.”
