Arizona gas prices down during outbreak, still among highest in US

PHOENIX – Gas prices across the United States are down during the coronavirus outbreak, but Arizonans are still seeing some of the highest prices in the country.

According to AAA, the national average price for gas in the United States is $1.86 while Arizonans are paying $2.28, the sixth-highest average in the country.

“What the west is seeing is it has the most expensive state averages in the country, but it is also seeing significant decreases,” AAA Arizona spokesperson Aldo Vazquez told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Sunday.

The drop in gases prices comes from the price of crude oil being cheap and people not traveling amid the coronavirus.

Arizona’s average gas price is 9 cents cheaper than a week ago and 41 cents cheaper than a month ago, Vasquez said.

Compared to this time last year, Arizonans are paying an average of 66 cents less at the pump.

“The general trend has always been that Arizona sees higher gas prices than the rest of the country,” Vazquez said.

Around the country, Wisconsin had the lowest price for gas at $1.30 per gallon, according to AAA.

Hawaii’s average was $3.24 while California had the highest in the continental U.S. at $2.87 per gallon.

Vazquez said AAA expects to see gas prices go lower over the next couple of weeks and for the foreseeable future as Americans continue to stay home and social distance.
