A drug dealer caught with 75 pounds of fentanyl powder earlier this year was sentenced to seven years in prison last Tuesday, according to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
Jose Soto-Olguin pleaded guilty to drug trafficking offenses following an investigation that led to the seizure of the powder and one kilogram of heroin, prosecutors said.
How did authorities catch the fentanyl trafficker?
The investigation began Jan. 27 and involved the Attorney General’s Office, Phoenix Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration.
After learning Soto-Olguin would receive a large shipment of illegal drugs, investigators set up surveillance. They watched another person hand him a large tire, which Soto-Olgiun struggled to load into the back of his truck.
Authorities then pulled him over, and a police K-9 alerted to drugs inside the tire. Investigators found the fentanyl powder inside.
A search of Soto-Olguin’s apartment uncovered the heroin and evidence of drug sales.
In addition to the seven-year prison sentence, he was also punished by having to pay around $9,000 in drug fines and to forfeit his interest in the vehicle he used for drug transportation.
