PHOENIX — The Arizona Board of Regents appointed John Arnold as its new executive director on Thursday, four months after its previous director announced she would be stepping down to be appointed as state treasurer.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to work with our exceptional board, staff and university presidents to further the success of Arizona’s three outstanding public universities,” Arnold said in a statement.

“The continued success of these institutions is critical for both the advancement of individuals and Arizona’s long-term prosperity. Through these universities, our state is benefiting from and impacting communities all over the world. I am excited to play a role in this work.”

Arnold, who previously served as the state budget director under former Gov. Jan Brewer, had been serving as the board’s interim managing director since May.

“Mr. Arnold is an outstanding, highly-qualified individual with a proven track record of the highest caliber,” board chair Ron Shoopman said in a statement.

“I am confident he will bring astute and insightful leadership to build upon the board’s sound public university enterprise governance.”

Eileen Klein, the head of the Arizona Board of Regents, announced in March that she would be stepping down from her position after serving on the board for five years. She was appointed as state treasurer that next month.

Arnold had joined the board in 2015 as the vice president of business management and financial affairs. He also served as director of the Arizona School Facilities Board after graduating from Brigham Young University.

“His exceptional fiscal background provides a strong complement to his strategic leadership,” Shoopman said.

“Working together with the board and our university presidents, I believe Mr. Arnold’s forward-thinking approach will reinforce our work to ensure our university system is serving students, businesses and the state to its greatest capacity.”

Arnold’s annual salary was set at $275,000. The appointment was effective upon board approval and execution of a letter of appointment by the board chair and Arnold.
