Arizona Army National Guard unit heading overseas

PHOENIX – An Arizona Army National Guard aviation unit heading to the Middle East will be sent off in a ceremony in Phoenix on Friday.

National Guard officials said the 30-soldier detachment would be supporting medical evacuations for Operation Freedom Sentinel.

The send-off ceremony was scheduled at the Army Aviation Support Facility at Papago Park Military Reservation on McDowell Road and 48th Street.

Gov. Doug Ducey was expected to speak at the ceremony.

The deployment will be the unit’s third in eight years assisting overseas contingency operations.

Two weeks ago, 25 soldiers from the Guard’s 158th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade were assigned overseas.

The state’s Army National Guard has deployed eight units during this fiscal year.
