Arizona AG warning residents to be cautious of coronavirus scams

PHOENIX — As the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 spreads across the state and country, scammers are looking to capitalize.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich released a statement Thursday advising Arizona residents to stay vigilant of scammers using the current state of the country to cash in.

“Our consumer protection team is working hard to protect consumers during this difficult time, and we will continue to do so long after it ends,” Brnovich said in the release.

“There is no statute of limitations for the state to take action under the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act – so if you engage in fraudulent behavior today, you may think you can hide, but we will come after you if you violate the law.”

There are three types of scams to keep an eye out for, Brnovich said.

With COVID-19 a major focus, scammers are looking to take advantage of the virus. Residents should beware of “any product or service promising to prevent, treat, or cure the virus, as it’s unlikely the science supports the claim.”

Brnovich also advises to avoid clicking on suspicious emails or links offering information on coronavirus, and always stay updated on the latest Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention information.

While the federal government has considered sending money to help people through the pandemic, a plan has not yet been approved. That hasn’t stopped government imposter scams, which have already begun asking residents for information in regards to receiving a check. The government will never ask for social security numbers, bank account information or credit card numbers over the phone.

Working from home can also leave consumers vulnerable as they try to navigate the work week as best they can. Brnovich advises those in the state to triple-check business reputations, get an expert opinion and “don’t pay money to make money.”
